How to use eggshell in your garden

Eggshells can be beneficial in gardening in several ways. They are a natural source of calcium and can help improve soil quality, deter pests, and enhance plant growth. Here are some ways you can use eggshells in your garden:

  • Soil amendment: Crushed eggshells can be mixed into your garden soil to provide a slow-release source of calcium, which is essential for plant cell growth and structure. This can be particularly beneficial for calcium-loving plants like tomatoes and peppers.
  • Seed starting: When starting seeds indoors, you can use eggshell halves as biodegradable seedling pots. Fill the half-shell with potting soil and plant your seeds. When it’s time to transplant, you can plant the entire eggshell and seedling directly into the garden, as the shell will decompose over time.
  • Pest deterrence: Crushed eggshells can act as a natural pest deterrent. Sprinkle them around the base of plants to help deter soft-bodied pests like slugs and snails, which don’t like to crawl over sharp or abrasive surfaces.
  • Fertilizer: Eggshells also contain trace elements like magnesium, which can benefit plant growth. Crushed eggshells can be sprinkled around the garden as a supplementary fertilizer, especially for plants that benefit from added calcium and magnesium.
  • Compost additive: Eggshells can be added to your compost pile. They help balance the pH of the compost, provide nutrients, and aid in the decomposition process. Just crush the eggshells before adding them to your compost.
  • Mulch: Larger eggshell pieces can be used as mulch around plants. This can help conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and deter some pests.
  • Deter cats: If you have issues with cats digging in your garden, consider placing crushed eggshells on the soil’s surface. Cats dislike the texture, and it may deter them from using your garden as a litter box.

When using eggshells in your garden, it’s essential to crush them finely to prevent them from being a tripping hazard or creating an unsightly mess. You can use a mortar and pestle or a food processor to achieve a fine consistency.

Keep in mind that while eggshells can be a helpful addition to your garden, they should not be your sole source of nutrients. You should still use a balanced fertilizer and maintain good gardening practices to ensure healthy and productive plants.
