April Showers Bring May Flowers

At this time it is important that our plants obtain the proper amount of water and nutrition to have healthy growth. Maintain good watering habits for the dry months to come.

Calendar & Checklist

May-June:
  • Set supports for floppy plants, vines, and vegetables
  • Begin weeding
  • Start up the irrigation system
  • Start planting annuals
  • Apply insect control
  • Replace tattered flags
  • Aerate and moisten compost pile to speed decomposition
  • As the night temperatures moderate into 60’s move house plants outdoors
  • Replace all overgrown shrubs
  • Begin application of deer repellents
  • Move self-sown annuals and perennials to desired locations
  • Sow seeds of corn, cucumber, and melon directly in the garden
  • Begin deadheading roses
  • Fertilize annuals and container plants
  • Replant herb garden with new seedings
  • Cover ripening berries with netting to protect them from birds
  • Dig and divide spring bulbs that are crowding
  • Treat your grass to brown patches

How to Check for Grubs

  • Find a one-foot by one-foot section of your lawn
  • Shave back the sod
  • If there are eight or more grubs in this area, your lawn is experiencing a grub problem that needs to be treated.
